His parents were fighting again. It did not bother Nassor very much anymore. He had grown used to it. They fought about a lot of things, but mostly about family. His father, Herman Karloff was always inviting his relatives to stay when they were anywhere nearby. His mother, Mary Shelley Karloff did not appreciate this. In her mind, Herman's relatives were a bit too strange for her taste and she wanted to keep them away from Nassor because she did not want him becoming as strange as the rest of the Karloffs. And now he could hear them again, passing his room and going down the stairs, their voices raised.
"Herman I don't want to hear another word about it. Of all the people in the world, why Uncle Ardeth?" His mother was obviously very disturbed by the thought of this Uncle Ardeth, and this intrigued Nassor.
"He's coming all the way from Egypt, the least we can do is give him a place to stay. Besides, he'll probably be busy. He's bringing ancient Egyptian artifacts to be put on display in the "New Holland Museum of History". I hear he's even bringing a mummy." Nassor knew that his father was trying to be reassuring, but those words just made his mother more upset.
"A mummy?" she asked, her voice filled with disbelief.
"You knew I was upset when Colossus died and you decided to teach Nassor a lesson about mummification. And then when Nassor and those other children were obsessed with raising their dead pets! And you have the nerve to tell me your uncle is bringing a mummy? Can you imagine what would happen if Nassor tried to bring that mummy back to life? I don't want those sorts of things to kill him like they did Ardeth."
"I'm absolutely certain everything is going to be fine. And besides, I thought all those experiments the children did were fascinating." Mary shot him a look that conveyed a huge amount of shock and anger.
"And it's also the reason that Nassor does not have any friends." Mary practically yelled, then quieted herself.
"I just don't want Nassor to become as strange as this town, the other children or any of your relatives. If Uncle Ardeth has to come, fine. But keep him away from Nassor.
And the way she said this last part, almost like a threat, made Nassor realize just how serious everything was that his parent s were talking about. He could not even begin to imagine how powerful everyone would think he was if he could bring a mummy that had been dead for centuries back to life. For this was no longer about school science fairs. This was about rivalries, avenging Colossus, who had been squished beyond revival by Toshiaki's pet "Shelley". Nassor had a new lust for power. He knew now he would stop at nothing to talk to Uncle Ardeth.
